Further along the road towards Ubud is the village
of Mas. Famous for woodcarving, Mas offers
a myriad of wooden items. Some of the most talented
wood carvers on the island live in Mas, and in
the workshops there can be found groups of young
workers supervised by elderly men. Busy chiselling
away Topeng masks, with their versatile range
of expressions and personalities. Masks are in
either modern or traditional form.

The main road of the town is lined with dozens
of workshops. You can buy mass produced soft wood
carvings or more expensive and highly crafted
pieces from ebony, jackfruit, teak, and sandalwood.
Particularly fine specimens of wood carvings can
be seen at the Nyana Tilem Gallery, one of the
first galleries you come to in Mas.
Mas is also of historical significance to Bali's
history as it was here that the great priest Nirartha
has his hermitage in the Pura Taman Pule.
